Morocco provides some of the film's most recognisable scenery. The production filmed in Marrakech, Tahnaout, El Haouz, Essaouira and Ouarzazate, with the spectacular UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Benhaddou transformed into the ancient city of Troy. Rather than filming on the Greek island of Ithaca itself, Nolan chose Favignana, just off Sicily's west coast, to represent Odysseus' legendary homeland. The island's crystal-clear waters, dramatic limestone cliffs and hilltop fortress created the perfect backdrop for Ithaca, while filming later moved to Lipari, Vulcano and Basiluzzo in the Aeolian Islands to portray the mythical realm of Aeolus, God of the Winds.
